Push Button, Make Podcast

The leaps and bounds that AI platforms have made in the last year is breathtaking. Generative text and generative voice are crossing the “uncanny valley” and close to becoming indistinguishable from non-AI-assisted work.

Take for instance a new tool from Google Labs, Notebook LM. This tool, tagged as a virtual research assistant, is designed to help students take notes and study. Pupils can upload a course syllabus and notes, and Notebook LM will help dissemble and reassemble information using the Gemini AI.

Last week, Google added “Audio Overview” functionality which points to where podcasting may be headed. Press a button, and Notebook LM will generate a 2-person “podcast” discussing the work. And the conversation sounds pretty good, complete with the hosts hemming and hawing.

As an experiment, I uploaded a PDF of In Cold Blood, the Truman Capote classic. Ten minutes later (give the AI a break, it’s a 343-page book!), it gave me a dialogue discussing the book. Take a listen here.

Think of the possibilities for hyper-local news or niche content — sourced by trusted brands! The rapid advancements in AI-powered tools like Notebook LM demonstrate that we are only scratching the surface of what’s possible. Whether it’s generating audio summaries or creating dynamic content, the boundaries are being pushed further each day.
